ZEROHour Newsletter: September 2020
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is All About YOU!
It's amazing to see you and the rest of our passionate prostate cancer community kick into high gear during Prostate cancer Awareness Month. Because of you, September is already off to a strong start. Take a look at what’s happening during the most important month of the year:
Every Monday this month, we’ll be busting some #MondayMyths around prostate cancer, and on Fridays we’ll be sharing some #FridayFacts. Head to Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter to be in the know! (And remember share, like, and comment to help spread awareness!)
You can join thousands across the country who are spreading the word by sharing their passion to support patients in this critical time of need on social media. Register for an upcoming virtual event (more details below), download and print the #ZEROstrong sign, snap a pic, and then share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Remember to use the hashtag #ZEROstrong in your posts for a chance to receive a shout-out from ZERO on social media.
Purchase some cool new ZERO swag from Nike! All purchases will benefit ZERO, and you can customize your gear.
Join Us: Virtual Run/Walks Every Weekend
This weekend marks the first of our September Virtual Run/Walks. Kick off Fall by getting active, raising awareness, and supporting your local prostate cancer community during the COVID-19 crisis.
You can create a day of your dreams, like Tracy (pictured here) did by inviting his family to sport fun blue hair styles as they raced around the block! See more photos here.
It’s free to sign up, so register for your local event today and share how you partake using the hashtag #ZEROstrong on social media!
30 for 30: Matching Dollars Make Your Gift Count Twice!
30 for 30 may be a popular ESPN show, but it’s also an easy way to help men in need! This September, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, you can help raise $30,000 for patients and families impacted by COVID-19 in just 30 days.
Any donation made through Sept. 30 will be doubled, so you can make twice the impact. Read why patients like Jonathan need your help NOW. Donate more more than $100, and you can receive a gift of a ZERO mask.
Save the Date for the ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit
This February, everyone’s favorite annual event will be back. The ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit is returning in a VIRTUAL form! Join us on February 28 - March 4 to connect with your fellow prostate cancer patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders nationwide to take part in timely educational and advocacy opportunities.
At the ZERO Summit, you can participate in informative and interactive sessions on the latest in prostate cancer research and treatments, preventative nutrition, effective caregiving, and much more. Select attendees will join others in their area to have digital meetings with their elected officials. They’ll share their personal stories, educate officials about the need to support legislation and research funding, and advocate to make prostate cancer a priority on Capitol Hill.
Registration opens October 1. It’s free to sign up, so set a calendar reminder today!
You Made an Awesome Impact!
Great news! A few weeks ago, we asked you and other members of the prostate cancer community to contact your congressional representative in support of H.R. 6092, the Veterans Prostate Cancer Research and Treatment Act.
Because of your passion and dedication to protecting our protectors, this bill took the floor this morning during an important hearing on the issue of high prostate cancer rates among Veterans.
But we can’t stop now! This legislation may be voted on by early November, so we need you to continue calling, emailing, writing to, and tweeting your legislators! Check out this blog post to learn how to reach out to your legislator and advocate in support of prostate cancer patients.
Meet Nathan! The New CDC Prostate Cancer Avatar Program
Finally! After years of behind the scene collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ZERO, and other patient advocacy groups, the CDC recently launched a prostate cancer avatar program.
This state-of-the-art avatar, named Nathan, can answer your questions and provide guidance. It’s easy to have an interactive conversation with Nathan to help you decide if you should get screened, or what treatments might be available to you. He can even suggest questions to ask your physician!
Note: When chatting with Nathan, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers are best.
Prostate Cancer Research Study
When you’re living with metastatic prostate cancer, being able to keep the tumor under control for as long as possible allows men to maintain a good quality of life. But despite medical advances in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer, options remain limited. The TALAPRO-2 clinical trial is studying a possible treatment for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer and it’s looking for men diagnosed with this form of prostate cancer who also have DNA damage repair (DDR) deficiencies.
Stepping Up and Speaking Out
This month, we're recognizing ZERO Champion Jodie Benson, who is spending her fall stepping up and speaking out about prostate cancer by participating in 15 Virtual Run/Walks! Will you join her?
