Welcome to the ZEROHour Extra Eastern Region newsletter. This e-resource is shared quarterly to provide you with useful information on local prostate cancer events, news, and inspiring stories in your community.

As 2022 comes to an end, you can take the opportunity to support nonprofit organizations such as ZERO and receive tax-deduction benefits for the year. Consider donating to ZERO and encourage your friends and family to do so as well. All donations will be double-matched up to $300K through Dec 31. Follow ZERO on social media and share posts with your friends and family so they know where to donate and why ZERO's programs are important for patients and their families.

Eastern Region Updates

Eastern Region Updates

As ZERO continues to grow, there are some changes to the Chapters and some expansion of roles:

Mirandy McClellan is the Eastern Region Chapters Coordinator. She helps the Chapter Team across the region to make sure that all events in the Eastern Region go smoothly.

Josh Woods has taken on the new role of Regional Director, Eastern Chapters. He will be covering the entire Eastern Region Team and is looking forward to continuing the growth in the area.

Renee Haney has stepped into a new role as the National Director, Chapters and will be the contact for all unaffiliated Chapters, and all National activities.

We are looking forward to the continued growth of the Chapters Program across the country.

Wrapping Up a Great Run/Walk Season

ZERO Run/Walk

In November we wrapped up the 2022 Run/Walk season. Thanks to everyone who took part in these events and for supporting those affected by prostate cancer. Following are some Chapter highlights:

South Atlantic

  • The first Wilmington Run/Walk was hosted by Wilmington Health and had 75 participants, raising $44,000.
  • Raleigh was hosted with partner Associated Urologists of North Carolina. 150 people raised $62,000.
  • Charlotte had 200 attendees raising $87,000. The host practice was Urology Specialists of the Carolinas.
  • The 9th Annual Greensboro Run/Walk at Alliance Urology had 300 people registered and $93,000 was raised.

Southeast

  • Augusta Urology Associates hosted the Augusta Run/Walk which raised $53,000 and was attended by 110 participants.
  • South Florida raised $88,000.
  • Tampa General Hospital and Florida Urology Partners hosted the Tampa Run/Walk where 270 participants raised $70,000. This was the first Tampa event since 2014.

East Coast Metro

  • NYC raised $100,000 and had 400 participants. Some famous guests attended, including actor Dominic Fumusa and Jay Jay French, founding member of rock band Twister Sister.
  • Philadelphia had 300 participants and was very close to hitting $100,000. A big thank you to MidLantic Urology and Kelly, the Race Director, for setting big goals this year.
  • This was a first year event for North Jersey. 200 people registered and raised $90,000.
  • South Jersey rounded out the East Coast Metro event series at the Valenzano Winery. Over 300 participants registered and $80,000 was raised.

Mid-Atlantic

  • Survivors, patients, caregivers, friends, medical professionals, families, and neighbors gathered in Harrisburg and raised $96,000.
  • Hampton Roads returned with host partner Urology of Virginia. 225 gathered and raised $85,000.

Non-Chapter

  • Boston was hosted by Greater Boston Urology. The event had over 340 participants, 43 teams, and raised $152,000.
  • The Dr. Sanford J. Siegel Prostate Cancer Run/Walk was hosted by Chesapeake Urology. 775 participants and 73 teams helped raise $300,000.
  • Cincinnati was back with new host partner Cincinnati Cancer Advisors. 140 participants helped raise $64,000.
  • The National Virtual Run/Walk took place the weekend of September 30. Thank you to presenting partner AutoNation. Runners and walkers came together across the country to help ZERO out prostate cancer through the RunGo app.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2022 Run/Walk season and helped raise funds and awareness for those affected by prostate cancer. We could not do this without you.

East Coast Metro

ZERO Champion Steve Newsom was the mission speaker at the South Jersey Run/Walk where he shared his message and story with all in attendance.

Mid-Atlantic

Champion Lyle Lueck led his first team in the Hampton Roads Run/Walk on October 15. Lyle is involved with the Chesapeake Southside Lions Club who supported the Run/Walk. Thank you, Lyle, for spreading awareness in your community.

South Atlantic

Champion Tracy Peck, Race Director for the Charlotte Run/Walk, led the successful return of our in-person event this year. Tracy organized the efforts at Urology Specialists of the Carolinas to support the Run/Walk, pulling together colleagues, doctors, sponsors, and patients to make the event a huge success. Thank you, Tracy, for all of your hard work.

Southeast

Congratulations to Darrell Sabbs, ZERO's first recipient of the Early Detection Impact Award for the amazing work he is doing hosting PSA testing events in Albany, Georgia and Southeast Georgia in partnership with local churches. In 2022, Darrell hosted several events which tested more than 700 men. Thank you Darrell for making a difference in your community.

Help raise money for the 2023 Philadelphia ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk, hosted by MidLantic Urology, by purchasing tickets to the following Philadelphia Flyers games:

  • February 9 - 2010s Throwback Jersey game vs. the Oilers
  • February 24 - $1 ice cream night vs. the Canadiens
  • March 5 - Flyers vs. the Red Wings
  • March 17 - Go Green night/$5 green beer vs. the Sabres

A portion of each ticket sold for these four games will go to ZERO.

Eastern vs. Central/Western Chapters

The ZERO Chapter Team is committed to making a big end-of-year impact, and the challenge has been issued to see which region can raise the most money from November 15 - December 31. The region that raises the most will earn ultimate bragging rights in the year to come. Most importantly though, with your help, we hope to make a difference for the patients and families we get to work with every day. Join the Eastern Team or make a donation to help us reach our goal to beat the Central/Western Region in donations. Who doesn't love some friendly competition? Make a donation to the Eastern Team.

Champion Chats

Join the East Coast Metro and Mid-Atlantic Champion Chats on the first Thursday of the Month at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The December Champion Chat will be replaced by the Holiday Bake. We hope to see you there!

The South Atlantic Champion Chat takes place on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

2023 ZERO Summit

Be a Part of the
2023 ZERO Summit

Patients, partners, caregivers, supporters, researchers, and professionals will gather February 26-28 in Washington, D.C. for three days of education, support, and advocacy. Please register today to help make a difference for those affected by prostate cancer. If you want to take your involvement to the next level, consider attending the Summit as an advocate who will meet with legislators to promote prostate cancer research, education, and awareness. To participate, just indicate your interest in advocating in your registration.
