SEPTEMBER IS PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM), and for patients, survivors, caregivers and loved ones, this is YOUR month. Working together, the inspiring prostate cancer community will spread one very important PCAM message: EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!

Things kick off on September 1 with ZERO Cancer Day, a 24-hour event that celebrates the impact donors are making in the fight to ZERO OUT prostate cancer. Don't miss a limited-time TRIPLE MATCH opportunity on September 1. When you make a donation in support of ZERO Cancer Day, your impact will be tripled - helping more men and families battle this disease. Don't want to wait to participate? Other PCAM highlights include a wide range of events, such as 22 ZERO Run/Walks that are taking place throughout the country, local events, livestream fundraising, podcasts, and much more (information on all of these below).

Throughout September you will receive important educational information and resources, such as an "Am I at Risk?" quiz that will help to determine your risk for prostate cancer. We will also share information about the 2023 ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit and details about a new award spotlighting individuals who are going above and beyond in spreading the word that EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES.

Register for a ZERO Run/Walk in Your Community

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is the biggest month of the year for the ZERO Run/Walk series, with 22 events happening throughout the country. Jamie Bearse, CEO of ZERO states, "we are excited to be back to hosting in-person events this year, giving the prostate cancer community a chance to be together and to offer each other some needed support and camaraderie. It is important to raise awareness about this disease during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the 22 Run/Walks in this series will help to do just that." If you cannot make a Run/Walk event in person, or want to participate virtually from any location, download the RunGo App, which you can access in the App Store or Google Play. LISTEN TO NEW PODCASTS

As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, three brand new podcasts will be released. Prostate cancer survivor and founder of rock band Twisted Sister, Jay Jay French hosts two special editions. One features Rob Halford of the rock band Judas Priest, who shares how sobriety and sexuality factored into his own prostate cancer journey. In the second podcast, Jay Jay chats with Cowboy Max of TikTok fame. Max is a goat farmer from New Mexico who was diagnosed at just 46. This lively conversation between an ‘80s rocker and a modern-day cowboy is one you don't want to miss! In the third episode, ZERO's Dr. Reggie Tucker-Seeley talks to former NBA All-Star Grant Hill about his passion for raising awareness about prostate cancer among Black men. These podcasts will be released throughout September on the Prostate Cancer Awareness Month webpage.

If you have a support group, webinar, seminar, or other prostate cancer event that will benefit the community, you can post it right to the calendar.

Advocacy in Action

It has been a busy month for ZERO advocates. Congress is currently in recess, so ZERO advocates have been connecting with their representatives by setting up their own meetings on their home turf. Establishing these connections is vital toward the goals of increasing federal research and awareness programs and, ultimately, the end of prostate cancer. As the saying goes, persistence and consistency lead to success. If you are interested in doing your own advocacy for prostate cancer, you can visit the Advocacy at Home website, with all the information and tools you need to succeed.

If meeting with your congressperson isn't up your alley, there are other ways to help in the fight against prostate cancer. With Prostate Cancer Awareness Month coming up soon, now is the perfect time to request a Proclamation from your elected officials acknowledging September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Doing so is easy with this proclamations toolkit that includes everything you need to help raise awareness in your community.

What is Health Equity and Why is it Important?

Everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive prostate cancer, regardless of race, sexual orientation, financial resources, or area of residence. This aspiration is called health equity, and it is a topic that will be addressed regularly in this new quarterly ZEROHour feature, What is Health Equity, and Why is it Important? In the first installment, Dr. Reggie Tucker-Seeley, VP of Health Equity at ZERO explains health equity and how to achieve it.

Progress in Prostate Cancer Research

Progress in Prostate Cancer Research is a ZEROHour feature that includes some of the latest research from the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). This month's column addresses recent developments shared at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. Among the findings discussed were that the combination of Lu-PSMA and immunotherapy appears to offer promising results; and new results were presented from the outcomes of the TheraP Trial comparing Lutetium-PSMA vs. Cabazitaxel.

For over 15 years and almost 200 consecutive columns, Dr. Mark A. Moyad of University of Michigan Medical Center, Department of Urology has offered practical advice to improve health outcomes. In the latest issue, he looks at how fiber can be not only helpful for your digestive system, but it is also being studied to improve immune responses to some forms of cancer treatment.

Livestream Fundraising Opportunities

September is full of exciting livestream events promoting education and awareness during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The Apex Legends Charity Tournament, supporting ZERO, will take place on September 24, 10:00 a.m. Eastern - tune in to the event on the ZERO Twitch page. ZERO will also be assisting in a speedrunning event (a playthrough of a video game with the goal of completing it as fast as possible) for Mega Man alongside fundraiser Kammesennin. COMMUNITY Support Groups ZERO's Us TOO Prostate Cancer Support Groups meet regularly. Many of these groups meet virtually and these meetings can be accessed by phone or by internet, and can be attended from any location. Other groups are meeting in person or offer a hybrid of virtual/in-person meetings. » Find a support group.

CHAMPIONS CORNER Meet Amanda Tribuzio Amanda Tribuzio is from Plainfield, IL and has played a critical role in the growth of multiple ZERO Run/Walks in the Midwest Chapter, including the Chicago - SEA Blue Run/Walk, which takes place on September 18. When asked why she is passionate about the fight against prostate cancer, she said "Because men need to know that their issues are just as important as they are. Because men need the extra encouragement to get help, to talk about what's going on, and to not shy away from their health just because the world isn't making a spectacle out of it. Because it's important to me, for my husband, for my father, for my son." CLINICAL TRIALS The PROMISE Registry: James' Story When James was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he really didn't know what to do next. With a recommendation from his doctor, James got his genes tested in order to see if there was a genetic factor to his diagnosis. James' results showed that he had a mutation in his BRCA2 gene which often leads to a decrease in protection from certain cancers over time, including prostate cancer.
