I run to honor my dad, my hero... Steve Hierro!
In 2012, I decided to start running, having never done so before. I started a training program to run a 5k. Shortly after making the decision, my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My family was in shock, but we stood together and thankfully found an amazing surgery to take care of my father.
When I was looking for a 5k to run as my 1st, I saw the Dash for Dads Cleveland which benefited Prostate Cancer. I immediately knew that I wanted to run it, not only to celebrate my accomplishment of running a 5k, but to honor my father. He had surgery two months before the race to remove the cancer. My dad was waiting for me at the finish line to celebrate my accomplishment. It was an incredible moment!
I'm happy to say that my dad is now living a healthy, cancer-free life. I have participated in the 5k every year since 2012, and have been grateful to have numerous friends participate on my team each year. I have raised enough funds each year to have a sign with my dad's name placed along the course. My father is so proud of me for raising funds in his honor. I decorate his signs each year with photos.
I am incredibly grateful that my dad has been at the finish line each year. The past two years, my niece, Sophia, and nephew, Gabriel, participated in the Kids Superhero Dash to honor their "papa". I'm excited to be participating again in 2016, and have my family standing at the finish line. We will be celebrating 4 years cancer free for my dad, and 4 years as a runner for myself.
I’m taking part in the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk - Cleveland on August 27, 2016 to raise money that will be used to promote greater awareness about prostate cancer, provide free testing to men around the U.S. to combat this leading men’s health disease, and advance cutting-edge research toward finding a cure. Will you help me? I hope that one world, no one will ever have a loved one affected by this disease.
Thank you in advance for your generosity! My dad and I appreciate your support!
