Welcome to Bill "Doc" Byrd's Personal Page
One in seven fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, partners, and friends will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, including 13,210 men in TX this year alone.
I am one of those seven (a Father, Husband, Son, Friend and Brother to Many! 20 May 2011, the day before my Wife's birthday, I was told that I have prostate cancer. I gave a day to be upset about it. Then I decided to begin the fight. Change my life. Change some of my habits, Lose weight and get in better shape. 26 July 2011, I began my treatment. 133 radioactive iodine-125 seeds were placed in my prostate. Anywhere from 40 to 100 seeds are commonly implanted. I had a tad more!
The next 5 to 6 months were, to say the least, uncomfortable. Radiation really started peaking in Oct thru Nov. I continued to workout and run, even during the really bad days. Hell, I even did my first run during the peak, Combat Medic 10K Run - 28 Oct 11.
26 July 2017, marked 6 years. I had my appointment 11 August. It was GREAT news, I should have one more year before I am declared Cancer Free! Yes, because of being so young, I will have to be vigilent for the remainder of my life. Some permenant radiation damage, but not a bad as it could have been. Some meds forever, but I am ALIVE! And Life is Good!
Mine was caught early and I feel fortunate, lucky, and most of all BLESSED. I am a SURVIVOR!
