Three-Time Survivor, One Bold Summit
I am fortunate to participate in the ZERO Peaks Challenge, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and provide critical support for prostate cancer patients and their families. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men affecting 1 in 8 during their lifetime. For Black men and veterans, the risk is even greater—1 in 5 will face this disease.
Why am I doing this?
As a three-time cancer survivor, my journey spans three decades, beginning in my 20s and continuing most recently in my early 40s. Each diagnosis and recovery has taught me the importance of resilience, early detection, and the power of support.
Life Beyond Survival: Thriving Every Day
For me, surviving cancer has meant discovering strength, resilience, and joy in unexpected places. Scuba diving and hiking have been transformative parts of my journey. Just months after surgery, I joined a hiking group, which gave me physical strength and mental clarity. Scuba diving, both before and after surgery, offered the joy I needed to center myself and keep moving forward. These activities are more than hobbies—they’ve been lifelines, teaching survivors like me to embrace the beauty and challenges of each new day.
The Ripple Effect of Cancer
Cancer doesn’t just impact the survivor—it ripples outward, affecting caregivers, spouses, children, friends, partners, and entire communities. Each of them plays a vital role in the fight, offering strength, love, and support in ways that are both visible and unseen. Every step I take up Mount Kilimanjaro represents a step forward in this shared journey—a step for those who fought before us, those fighting now, and those who will face this battle in the future. Together, every step is a testament to resilience, unity, and hope.
Our Goal Together
My first goal, with everyone’s support, is to make an impact of $12,500 for prostate cancer awareness and support. But I believe WE can aim even higher. If Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit stands tall at 19,341 feet, then let’s set our sights on raising $19,341 as well.
Together, we can prove that the summit truly is the limit—and maybe even beyond. This climb is not just a personal challenge—it’s a mission to amplify awareness and inspire action for the countless men and families impacted by prostate cancer, especially in communities disproportionately affected by this disease.
Every step, every dollar, and every bit of support brings us closer to a future free of prostate cancer. Let’s make this climb together!
