Please support my riding goal to end prostate cancer
I never planned to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. I am one of the nearly 200,000 men diagnosed with the disease each year. But because of a strong support network, a positive attitude (some will call it stubbornness) and remaining active I am learning how to adapt based on this unfortunate disease. This past year when I lost one of my best friends Dick Schade, my long-time friend/college roommate/fraternity brother/bike ride companion/coastal Maine sea kayak partner of 55 years to prostate cancer I hadn't bargained for fighting this disease myself. And sadly, Dick was one of over 34,700 men who are projected to die from prostate cancer this year. This disease spares no one and it's why I'm asking for your help.
Will you donate today to help me support prostate cancer patients and save lives?
By supporting my fundraiser for ZERO Prostate Cancer, you'll help remove the obstacles that stand between patients and the lifesaving care they need, allowing them to focus on what matters most - getting better. I found ZERO Prostate Cancer when I was first diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer 1 ½ years ago and have been incredibly impressed ever since. With a powerful vision statement - “our vision is Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free from prostate cancer” they are a passionate group worthy of our support! And with a new 2024 goal of having a newly diagnosed patient getting a call within 48 hours, ZERO is becoming one of the BOLDEST prostate cancer support organizations out there.
My unplanned journey started when I had my annual physical and my PSA came in slightly elevated and my primary care doctor felt a small lump that he recommended be monitored under the care of a urologist. During the next several months of active monitoring it became clear I needed to have a biopsy to determine the real issues. I had been reluctant to undergo a biopsy but after constant encouragement from Dick Schade I had the procedure. The biopsy indicated stage 4 cancer and shortly thereafter Dick passed from prostate cancer – two very impactful events on my life.
Your donation makes all the difference for patients getting the help they need. Donate today.
But with the support of my incredible family, friends and team of oncology doctors and some basic grit and determination of my own I have fought back and am currently undergoing radiation therapy which will hopefully further minimize the cancer. Early in my fight, my younger daughter, Katie, signed us of for a 40-mile Maine Lighthouse bike ride event. Our Team A Wee Ride completed the ride and were able to generate important donations to ZERO which will help advance awareness and support to all prostate cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. As one of ZERO’s top individual fundraisers in 2023, I was honored to receive their prestigious Bold for Blue award at last winter’s annual summit meeting in Washington, DC. While in DC, Katie and I met with Senator Susan Collins and aides to Senator Angus King and Rep Chellie Pingree to advocate for additional funding for ZERO. Katie and I will be back at this years Summit to continue our advocacy efforts.
So, we made it through 2023, met many old and new friends and supporters along the way and I had a great first annual bone scan result that indicated “significant reduction” in the size of the metastasized lesions. BUT, this battle never, ever ends so I am asking for your support in 2024 to continue the battle to achieve Generation ZERO. As we completed the 40-mile Maine Lighthouse Ride last year we are being BOLD in our goal for this year and are targeting the Metric Century Event (62 miles) on Saturday, September 7. Accordingly, I set an initial team goal of $6,200 but because of incredibility generous donors including one old grade school classmate and Camp friend who made a significant donation as his brother was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer now have a BOLD stretch goal of $30,000.
Can’t donate today? Share this fundraiser and invite your friends to give or join our fundraiser to make a difference!
Together, we can create a world where every prostate cancer patient has access to the best possible care and outcomes.
