Welcome to My Personal Page
While many of you know, others may be finding out for the first time that I have had my own personal battle with prostate cancer. I was diagnosed on September 06, 2016 and nothing I can share here will truly depict the almost two years since diagnosis.
As anyone who has been diagnosed with Cancer will tell you, the emotions will run the gamut and you will never see life through the same prism again. My journey has been an emotional, physical and mental rollercoaster encompassing PSA's, Biopsy, MRI's, Bone Scans, Consultations, mis-Diagnosis, 2nd and 3rd opinions, only to push pause, rewind and play again multiple times over. Through it all I was able to fight on with the support of family, friends and incredibly...strangers.
That being said, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of Education and being your own Healthcare Advocate. It will take tremendous inner strength to push back against the conventional and varying opinions, to at the end of the day make the final decision on treatment based on all the information you have gathered, what is right for You, and a gut call. Although I was told by many along the way, including many doctors, that I was living on the edge of a cliff while on active surveillance for a year and a half, I refused to settle for a treatment that I could potentially regret for the balance of my life.
I am so thankful for Dr. Bert Vorstman who was instrumental in opening my eyes that there was not just one or two treatment options and to not give in to the fear that others create. That I should not rush to the wrong treatment option, but to take the necessary time to make the right treatment decision, for Me. To seek out the Best of the Best in their particular expertise and surround mysellf with a Team. Without his voice I certainly would not have been as educated, more than likely would have chosen the wrong treatment and one based on poor diagnosis and multiple mistakes along the way.
So how did my journey end? It has not...
Four months ago after climbing to the peak of Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s Holy Mountain for prayer and reflection, a flight to Amsterdam and a train ride to Nijmegen, Holland, I underwent Focal Laser Ablation at Radboud University Medical Center under the incredible care of Dr. Jurgen Futterer. What I now consider to be one of the finest teaching facilities in the World and certainly one of the finest Doctors in Jurgen Futterer. An incredible professional and more so an incredible person.
So today I am hopeful that I am Cancer Free, and I am beyond appreciative that this is without any side effects. Today I am on an all encompassing Healing Journey and a Journey to help others with this same disease early in diagnosis and confused. Others looking for a resource to provide information, support or just a calming voice and a shared experience. My new journey starts with this Fund Raiser, and what I hope will be a more detailed narrative on my journey in the future. A document that can provide others in the same or similar situation a compass on how to navigate these choppy waters and calm the seas.
I'm participating in the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk because I want to put an end to prostate cancer. I will be running the 5K in South Florida on September 22nd. Please support me by making a tax-deductible contribution today!
