Chicago-SEA Blue Run/Walk

I was diagnosed in 2009, the month before my 59th birthday. Until 2008, I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT I HAD A PROSTATE. I was not alone. Most men don't seem to know much about their prostates and even fewer know about their prostate cancer risks! Perhaps if I had known that my grandfather had died of prostate cancer, or that military service increased my risks, things might be different. I walk and share my story so that others might be more aware and avoid the situation I am in. While I've treated my cancer with external radiation for 7 weeks, taken hormone therapy for the first 2 years and now continuously since 2015. In 2014, I was treated with a second type of radiation called high dose brachytherapy and in 2019 added a second type of hormone therapy. I've had three infusions of immunotherapy and six infusions of chemotherapy (yes, my hair fell out, but it's grown back). I've had radiation of a specific spot/tumor of my scapula to eliminate some bone pain. I’ve been genetic tested three times. My wife and I have even improved our diets.

So, what do I DO ABOUT IT? I talk to people. I set up information booths where I can. I lead a couple of support groups for men who’ve been diagnosed. I attend trainings and conferences about prostate cancer. I share with pharmaceutical researchers and review prostate cancer research grant requests from the patient’s perspective. I’ve spoken to groups who would let me. I serve on the board of National Alliance of State Prostate Cancer Coalitions. I go to Washington D.C. to talk to our representatives about prostate cancer and the needs of everyone affected by it. I solicit proclamations from government entities to raise prostate cancer awareness.
