Ivan is Running to Help End Prostate Cancer
Hi, family and friends. I'm excited to announce that I am racing the 2022 New York Marathon with Team ZERO this November 6th because I want to help put an end to prostate cancer. Odds are that you and your loved ones have been affected by prostate cancer given it is the second most common cancer diagnosis in American men (1-in-8 men) and the second most deadly (1-in-41 men). I am honored to help raise money for ZERO, an organization solely dedicated to prostate cancer education, testing, patient support, research, and advocacy.
Those of you who have been around for several years may remember the last painful (but awesome) thing I did to raise money for charity was boxing in the Wharton vs. Penn Law Fight Night in April 2016. Boxing training started out rough as evidenced by this video: https://vimeo.com/159532876?embedded=true&source=vimeo_logo&owner=48492035.
Triathlon training this year started out similarly rough, with my third consecutive year of barely walking due to a running injury in February. At that point, I decided that I had finally grown tired of injuring myself running. The next day, I signed up for this marathon. Seemed like decent way to figure things out...
I ultimately got my hand raised in Fight Night (picture above; all downhill from there) and was extremely proud of the money we raised for Harlem RBI, an organization that I coached a baseball team for. (Thank you!) I hope to have a similar "hand raised" photo to share with you in a couple of weeks after the marathon.
Thankfully, sticking to a training program and an absurd amount of stretching / foam rolling / warming up / cooling down has kept me almost injury free through my longest planned training run of 20 miles, which I completed last week. In old age, I am sadly becoming semi-realistic, so my goal has been to "continuously run" the race (no time/pace goal). To manage expectations, unless there's a miracle in the next two weeks, I will need to stop to manage inflammation but hopefully only a few times for ~1 minute each. Regardless, committing to all of you that I will finish the race one way or another will no doubt keep me moving. Your support over the years (not just in these overeager athletic pursuits) means the world to me. Thank you so much. Please feel no pressure whatsoever to donate to ZERO; even increasing your awareness to the pervasiveness of prostate cancer is a huge win.
Let's roll...
