Running for My Hero: A Mission to End Prostate Cancer
Did you know that one in eight fathers, sons, brothers, partners, and friends will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime? This startling statistic became deeply personal for me in October when my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While he has since undergone surgery, the experience was a turning point. Hearing this news on his birthday was bittersweet—it was reassuring to know he was receiving treatment, yet disheartening to realize he hadn’t shared this earlier. It reminded me of the challenges many Black men face, feeling they must navigate illnesses alone, and highlighted the urgent need for greater awareness and preventative measures.
This is why I’ve decided to run the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team ZERO. I started running in July as a hobby after sustaining a back injury at work, but now my running holds a deeper purpose. I’ve pledged to raise at least $1,750 for ZERO, an organization dedicated to ending prostate cancer. Your donation will support critical efforts such as research, patient financial assistance, early detection, and educational programs.
I’m not just running for my dad—I’m running for every man facing this disease and for Generation ZERO, the first generation free from prostate cancer. By supporting this cause, you can make a difference in the lives of prostate cancer patients and their families across the country. Together, we can fight for a future where no one has to face this journey alone. Thank you for joining me in this mission.
I love you dad.
-Your Loving Son. This race is for you.
